Minorities and Venture Capital: A New Wave In American Business
“Minorities and Venture Capital: A New Wave In American Business,” by Tim Bates
and William Bradford, summarized a study of returns of venture capital firms
investing exclusively in minority-owned businesses between 1989 and 1995. No
previous research effort had successfully identified and studied venture capital
firms that concentrate on making equity investments in minority business
enterprises. The authors drew several conclusions, most notably that “minority
enterprise venture capital investing is very profitable,” from their study of
investment returns.

Investment Opportunities In Emerging Domestic Markets
This report, developed in 2002 under the leadership of Darden School of
Business Assistant Professor Gregory B. Fairchild, defines the US Emerging
Domestic Market (EDM) and describes the many opportunities for EDM private
equity investment. Economists and entrepreneurs agree that equity funding is
essential to the next stage of EDM firm development. The study notes that the
“strategic partnership and operational benefits of equity funding will allow
promising entrepreneurs to stretch into the industry sectors that are ripe for
growth in the economy overall.”
